At the Cabin: Trumpet in Use

Possibly my favorite part of our cabin weekend this year was that my oldest niece brought her trumpet!  She happens to be a terrific trumpet player and was practicing some important music for the start of school.  She actually plays Great Grandpa McGinty’s trumpet, which was handed down to her dad, who bestowed it to her, so it was really fun to get to see this instrument which has been played by someone in our family for scores of years.  It was also really neat for Mr. SP to get to have a close look at it.

While Uncle Bryan was showing Mr. SP some of the unique features of the trumpet, he and Grandma Kathy told about how Grandpa McGinty’s mother (known as Grandma the Great) bought the trumpet for $25, which was enormously expensive.  When she caught Grandpa lying down on the floor of his room “practicing” one day she gave him what for!  “I paid big bucks for that instrument!  Big Bucks! You’d better take this seriously!”  (Or something like that).

One afternoon at the cabin most of the smaller kids were away on a trip into town, and my niece started practicing. She said I could take some pictures, which made me very happy.   I loved getting to finally hear her play.  I am so glad the trumpet came to the cabin too.
