Sunday Night at the Beach: Sweet Treats at Knife River

We have a favorite candy shop, just a bit up the North Shore at Knife River.  Because we pretty much can’t contain ourselves when we go, I try to limit our visits there to one or two per summer and let us splurge when we do go.  All summer long the kidlets have been reminding me that we had not been to the candy shop yet.  Since we went on so many trips up the North Shore, I just planned on stopping on our way up or back at some point, but it never happened.  We were in a rush to get to a campsite of some sort.  Someone fell asleep in the car on the way back and it was best to just keep driving.  We needed to get back to pick up the cat from the kennel.  There was always some sensible reason why we didn’t stop at the candy shop.

On Sunday I decided that the candy shop and the beach nearby would make a great destination beach for our weekly trip to the Lake.  The people in my family were thrilled.  Well, Dr. Peds didn’t actually know that we were going because he was working at the hospital.  And YaYa was serving hungry people a meal at a local shelter with her confirmation class.  We took requests as to what candy we might want to  bring back for her.

There are so many amazing and unique choices of sweet treats at the candy shop.  My tried and true favorites are peanut butter cups because I adore chocolate and peanut butter together, dark chocolate covered candy orange peels because I also love the combination of orange and chocolate, and salted dark chocolate covered caramels, which are truly amazing creations.  I also branched out and tried a fancy chocolate covered graham cracker, which was astounding.  Dr. Peds likes coconut almond joy cups and rocky road clusters.  YaYa likes chocolate and caramel covered pretzels.  The Banana is a fan of not salted chocolate covered caramels, and she tried a pretzel cup.  The boys went for a bag of gummy worms.  They love gummy worms.  I don’t know why anyone would choose gummy worms with all that homemade chocolate around, but I am to please, so gummy worms it was.

While they were waiting outside for me to finish paying for the candy (it is an expensive trip, but well worth it since the theme is splurging), the kidlets made up a crazy rhyme about stirring up some kind of chocolate stew next to the bear cut outs.  We had fun taking advantage of the photographic opportunities.

After we had acquired a bag of candy to take home, we headed just across the road and over to the beach access.  We savored our treat next to the beautiful water.  The beach at Knife River happens to be an excellent beach for sea glass, so we spent most of our time sifting through the pebbles.  We found several treasures to bring home.

Mr. Trouble on Feet was especially excited because it was his first time to find sea glass, and he snagged not one but FIVE pieces.
