Safely Home Again

For a bit more than a week Dr. Peds was in Haiti, on the outskirts of Port Au Prince working in a medical clinic.  He came back home late in the evening on Saturday.  The kidlets were excited to see him, of course, and really loved seeing the pictures and video of Haiti on his cell phone.  He came back with many interesting stories of the culture there, of the patients at the clinic that he saw, and of the places he stayed while he was there.  He talked about garbage in everywhere, sporadic electricity and generator use, and driving on crazy streets.  Such an adventure!

Dr. Peds and another doctor who traveled with him who goes to the clinic a couple of times a year brought some medical supplies with him to Haiti.  Before he left, there were piles of  “Haiti- bound stuff” all over the house.  I had to take some deep breaths on several occasions.  When he came back there were still piles of things returning from Haiti, but not as many piles!  Since there were empty suitcases coming back with him, Dr. Peds brought back Haitian vanilla (yummy!) and peanut butter.  One jar of peanut butter had real authentic cinnamon mixed in. I am sure normal cinnamon is real too, but this stuff is amazingly potent.  Another jar of peanut butter had pepper and spices in it, which was interesting (and not my cup of tea.  YaYa agreed).  He didn’t know about the pepper because he couldn’t read the ingredients listed in Creole.  Surprise!  The kidlets had fun trying the peanut butter.

Haiti is a place that is close to my heart, the home of two girls we support through Compassion International, and two orphanages we support a little as well.  I was so excited when Dr. Peds decided he wanted to go there along with some other other medical professionals at work to help in the clinic, which is in a poor, forgotten place the government sent people to live to get them off the streets after the earthquake, and then sort of forgot about.  While he was gone, things went surprisingly smooth here, which was a blessing.  I’m grateful for his safe return.
