AWANA Cars

The AWANA Grand Prix at our church was last Wednesday, which meant that there was a frenzy of car building activities during the early part of last week.  This was the first year that Mr. SP was too old to enter the official race, but he did build a car for the unofficial sibling race. It was a lovely black orca.  I forgot to take a picture of it.  Mr. SP rounded up some friends to help with the judging process, and he was an official runner during the race, which means that he was the person who delivered cars from the line judges at the finish line back to the starting line.  He did a great job.

It was Mr. TOF’s first official race!  He was so very excited.  In fact, he had a hard time falling asleep several nights in a row because he just couldn’t wait for race day to arrive.  He drew the outline for his car on the block of wood and Dr. Peds followed it with his saw as best as possible.  He also did all the painting himself.    Lo and behold, it was one fast little buggy.  It made it all the way to the speed finals, and he came home with the second place speed medal.  I cannot tell how how very happy this little boy was.  He flew high for days.

The Banana made a violin car.   She used mint dental floss for the strings, so it smelled good too.  She carefully modeled the cuts for the saw after her actual violin, and found the perfect little piece of scrap wood for the bridge.  That’s where convention stopped, though, because this girl who loves color created her dream instrument when she took out the paints.  It was fantastic.  She won a medal for the “Most Joyful” entry, and also came home with the “Kids Choice” medal, which was decided by a vote.  This violin-on-wheels is her favorite race vehicle so far, and she’s had some good ones throughout the past years:  a canoe, a shoe, a lollipop forest, just to name a few.

Every year there are so many terrific cars that are entered.  It is so fun to see the ideas that kids come up with.

Congratulations Isaiah! What a great car. You are always a winner with me.

I have never seen a violin on wheels. I absolutely love it!
