What I Learned in May

  • Instacart!  Oh my goodness gracious!  I’ve hated grocery shopping for years and years.  For our anniversary that we celebrated this month, along with many other wonderful gifts,  my husband gifted me with a year’s subscription to Instacart.  Someone at work had just shown him this amazing online grocery delivery app, and he decided we should try it out.  It was instant love on my part!  So, we signed up for the year.  I’ve already used it several times, and I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that almost all my groceries show up on my doorstep at a time I’ve arranged.  The produce has been fantastic.  Since we signed up Dr. Peds has shown several other people as well.  Everyone I’ve talked to who uses instacart (it turns out there are a lot of people who do) has loved it as well.
  • Speaking of groceries, if you DO go to an actual grocery store and have a ginormous cart filled with groceries, do not decide to use the self checkout line.  The Banana and I found ourselves in a situation where self checkout seemed to momentarily make sense, but in the end it was disastrous!  It took so much time and was just really an awful experience.
  • This month we needed to replace my desktop computer, which has been a workhorse for many years, but was very tired and growing slower by the second.  It moved downstairs to replace the useless homework computer that none of the resident teenagers could actually use to do homework because it was so old.  Along with the computer upgrade, I finally subscribed to Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom.  I’ve been using a super old version for as long as I could to avoid playing subscription fees, but it could no longer be easily upgraded.  I’m actually loving my new software and having fun learning Lightroom, which I did not have access to before.  I have a lot left to learn still, but that’s OK because learning new things is fun.
  • So much about learning anything is about repetition, and this is so very true in the process of learning music.  Amazingly difficult things can be learned through the process of breaking things down and repeating and repeating, thinking about things in different ways and repeating some more.  And guess what!  Anyone can decide to repeat things!  In learning new music across multiple instruments this month, I’ve also been struck by the benefits of just sitting on music, playing something that I can already play more than I would normally play it.  Even though I knew it before, when I know it even better the music sparkles more, details come out that would have otherwise have been looked over.
  • At the piano I learned a Fantasia by J.S. Bach and new arrangements of two different hymns.  On the cello I learned various etudes and I’m working on learning several difficult pieces that are long term learning projects.
  • I learned how to make chilled fruit soup, and I think it’s delicious.
  • We also have recently discovered coconut chia custard/pudding.  It’s so easy to make and very popular for breakfast around here.
