Thoughts on Careers

This afternoon Sarah was riding with my husband to the retail section of town (again . . . my husband just can’t seem to stay out of the retail section). In the car they were having some great conversation. Sarah was asking all kinds of thought provoking questions (or so I’m told, since I wasn’t there). And then this:

Sarah: Daddy, what would you do for your job if you weren’t a doctor?

Greg: Well, I don’t know . . . I might do this, or this , or this (he gave some different examples).

Sarah: Would you have to go to school more at a university if you did those things?

Greg: Well, probably I would have to do some more school because when you go to the university you learn how to do different kinds of jobs. No matter what job you choose you have to go to school of some kind to learn how to do that job.

Sarah: What if you wanted to be a teacher for big kids like our babysitters?

Greg: I’d have to go to school a couple of more years.

Sarah: How about if you wanted to be a kindergarten teacher? You know, Mrs. Forbort is a really smart person. Would you have to go to school more to be a kindergarten teacher?

Greg: Yes, I’d have to go to school for a few years because I don’t know everything about kindergarteners.

Sarah: (Taking all this in . . . ) But Daddy, What if you didn’t want to be a doctor and wanted to just work at a mall? Because I think working at the mall would be much better. Are you smart enought to work at the mall, Daddy?
