Carving the Pumpkins

It was a chilly (although not really downright cold) Halloween here. After sliding out of bed this morning, my prodigies demanded a “spooky breakfast.” I didn’t really have plans for a spetacular spooky breakfast, and we needed to take a trip to the grocery store, so I spent about a quarter of an hour convincing them that the granola I did indeed have on hand was spooky, very spooky indeed.

Upon finishing our crunchy delight and lounging around for a small bit on the couch, we ventured to the garage where we did some pumpkin carving. Greg stayed indoors next to the fireplace with The Banana (who is cutting more teeth and is yet again cranky).

Sarah’s pumpkin, the top one on the steps, was the first masterpiece we tackled. I cleaned out the insides. She’s never been much of one for pumpkin mush. She drew on the face with a marker, and I did my best to cut along the lines correctly. Please notice the ears on the side of this pumpkin’s face. The ears were a big deal.

Next we began Mr. Sneaky Pants’ pumpkin. Mr. SP really liked the pumpkin guts and was happy to assist me in scraping them out with an ice cream scoop. He liked scooping up the seeds in particular. I asked him what kind of mouth he wanted on the front of his pumpkin and he insisted that his pumpkin would be gritting its teeth and loudly growling. I did my best. You can compare their faces in the second picture below. He requested circle eyes and a circle nose. Circles are currently his shape of choice.

The Banana didn’t really have much imput on her pumpkin, as she was by then napping. However, I tried to capture her pleasant personality (when she’s not teething) and her current number of teeth that have fully descended: four on the top and two on the bottom. Her pumpkin is cheerful one on the bottom of the steps.

At about one o’clock I was finally done with pumpkins and lunch, and I carried the lovely pieces to the front steps and went back inside to do a few daily chores. After nap, Mr. SP and The Banana changed into their costumes and we went downstairs to take a picture of our pumpkins. To our surprise, our resident squirrels had been munching and lunching. Note the squirrel teeth marks on Mr. Sneaky Pants’ pumpkin.

It seems our pumpkins were so great that someone actually swiped them off our steps after trick or treating time tonight. When we went to lock the door and turn off the lights, our pumpkins were gone! I’m not really too upset about that, because someone else will have to fit them into their garbage can tomorrow morning!
