Neighborhood Music Night

Last Saturday we invited a few families from our neighborhood  and a few nearby friends to come to our house for Neighborhood Music Night.  It’s a night of music sharing that we began about a year and a half ago, and it’s a lot of fun.  The selections range from serious and difficult to silly and fun.  There are solos, duets, and a few ensembles.  Several of our friends were unable to make it, but some did, and we had a wonderful evening of violin, cello, string bass, oboe, trumpet, vocal selections, bass bars, traps sets,  and piano.  The participants ranged from preschool through middle aged.

Upon arrival everyone signs in on a slip of paper, writing down their name and what the instrument they will be playing.  We place them in a basket and draw out the next performer, which always mixes things up nicely.

Mr. Trouble on Feet was especially excited to perform.  We carried down his trap set.  He’s been working on some different beats with Dr. Peds, and he had a little routine all planned out that used the snare and bass drums, along with (his favorite), the high hat.  It ended in a cymbal crash.  He entitled his piece, “Don’t Move the Horse.”  He also played an obstinate on the bass bar while we sang a piece together.

Mr. SP played two small selections on his trumpet and a piece on the piano entitled “Gladiator”  The Banana played a selection on both the violin and piano.  YaYa played oboe and shared a hymn arrangement of “Come thou Font” that she learned on the piano.  Our guests put together a vocal ensemble, and a piano and string bass duet, as well as numerous solos.  We had more than an hour of music, followed by delicious snacks.

After feeding everyone sugar, we sent them outside to run around with flash lights.
