What I Learned in February

  • Hyacinths are native plants in the Eastern Mediterranean:  Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, and parts of Iraq.
  • No Children = no mess.  During their winter break from school the kidless spent some time with their grandma (they had a fabulous time) and I was all alone in my house.  (I love them a lot, but honestly, it was pretty wonderful).  I cleaned up once and everything stayed clean for days.  Astounding.  Also, the dishwasher ran only two times instead of three or four times each day.
  • I made progress on more flexible string crossings on my cello.
  • I learned that I should bring my camera along when I have an inkling that I’d like to take pictures of something, but I’m worried that it might be rude.  One of my student families invited us to their Eyeball Day party (Eyeball Day is a new February holiday invented by their youngest child).  It was every bit as quirky and awesome as I suspected it might be, but I left my camera at home because I didn’t know if it would be OK to take pictures.  It totally would have been OK, and I really wished that I had at least had the foresight to just bring it along in the car so that I could have pulled it out to document things like the eyeball launchers, the awesome spray painted T-shirts people were creating that said “Eyeball Day 2016,” the eyeball themed snacks, the wild game of “Capture the Eyeball” and the strongest piñata I’ve ever encountered, shaped like an eyeball, of course.
  • Rubber balls, those medium sized ones you see in cages at the supermarket, will clog a laundry shoot.  Go figure.
