Disaster Averted
Last Thursday the middle kidlets came home from school. It was a teaching day for me, and the choices for snacking around here were not great. The Banana asked if she could make cookies. I said that I wouldn’t be able to help her because I was about to start teaching students. She adamantly protested that she would be able to do it on her own. I asked if she had a recipe in mind. She did. She also mentioned that if she started right away most of the mixing would be done before my students even got started. I said, “OK!” She zipped off to the kitchen.
After a few minutes she came into the piano room carrying a measuring cup. “Mom, how do you measure 21 fourth cups?”
“Are you actually using a recipe?” I asked suspiciously.
“Yes!” She declared irritably.
“Can I SEE your recipe?”
She brought the recipe in. “See, right here on the top. 21 fourth cups of flour, right here on the chocolate chip bag.”
Oh! 2 1/4 cups! That made a lot more sense. I steered her in the right direction and a cookie disaster was averted. She had a great time making the cookies on her own, and shared them with her siblings. She also took a few plates of cookies to school to give to her teachers.
