Things I Learned in August

  • I learned several small pieces on my cello, and I’m in the middle of two bigger and trickier pieces.  It’s slow progress, but I just keep plugging a long.  I’m working on some of the upper positions and some tricky bowings, not to mention that elusive vibrato.
  • Stomach acid has a ph of 2.  I probably knew this a long time ago, but I relearned it this August.
  • I tried bubble tea for the first time at our local tea shop The Snooty Fox.  Isn’t that a great name for a tea shop?  It’s a neat place.  I should go there more often, but I have issues leaving my house.  Anyway, the bubble tea was really interesting.  It’s a sweet, sweet tea that almost feels like a cream soda with tapioca “bubbles” that are about the size of a regular marble and are slightly tea flavored.  You suck them up with a really big straw.  They are chewy and strangely really satisfying.  My overall impression of bubble tea was “pretty good.”  I actually wish the serving size was a bit smaller, because I was kind of tired of the sweetness by the end, but I really liked it at the beginning.
  • Reading the book Moloka’i inspired me to learn more about the Hawaiian leper colony and leprosy itself throughout history.  Fascinating. The book was a great read, by the way.
  • I learned how to load the kayak on top of the car with YaYa’s help.  Wahoo!  It opens up a whole new world of kayaking possibilities, although sadly we haven’t actually gone kayaking this month.  It’s OK, though.  September is a great month for kayaking.  True to form for our family, we are driving around with a kayak on top of our car at all times waiting for just the right moment to head to the Lake.
