Recent Favorite Reading: Middle Grade Fiction

  • The Imaginary by A.F. Harold:  This was a terrific read aloud.  The pictures were wonderful.  The story was full of imagination and suspense.  I came across this book entirely by accident, and I’m so glad I did!  I read it out loud to Mr. TOF, and both The Banana and Mr. SP grabbed it and read it themselves.
  • The Thing about Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin:  This might not be the perfect book, but it is a really good book, and it’s really well written.  The protagonist deals with grief of her friend and classmate, and in the process, the reader gets to compassionately empathize with her, while learning all sorts of interesting things about jellyfish, which are craftily woven into the story.
  • Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein:  OK, so I actually listened to the audiobook of this work while on a long car trip with kidlets, but it was a TERRIFIC audiobook.  The hours in the car just flew by.  It was just a fun, unique story, full of adventure, and literary goodness.
  • When My Sister Started Kissing by Helen Frost:  I was attracted to this book because it was written in verse, and it proved to be an engaging quick read.  Many things about this book felt realistic, and it seems like it would be a great fit for a reader in later elementary  grades.
  • Ramona The Brave, Ramona and Her Mother, Ramona and Her Father by Beverly Cleary:  I dearly loved this books as a child.  I have read them out loud more than three times to my own kidlets, and every single time I fall in love with them all over again!  They are so perfect.  There’s something about them that just rings true because this author really knows how to get inside the mind of Ramona, and Ramona does so many things that readers big and small cannot help but relate to.  Best of all, I have so many memories invested in these books.  I remember reading them as a child (I can even remember where I was and what I was wearing and what my family was doing when I read certain chapters), and I have memories of each of my kidlets sitting next to me while I have read them out loud, and I remember their reactions as I read.  So fun!  Mr. TOF has been loving these titles.
  • Eugenia Lincoln and the Unexpected Package by Kate Dicamillo:  It’s fantastic.  It might be my favorite of the books after the actual Mercy Watson series. I’ve always loved Eugenia, and I think she’s the perfect person to play the accordion.  I’m glad her sister had vision!  We laughed so hard over this book.
