Some Things I’m Loving

  • My electric pencil sharpener bit the dust.  It had been on the fritz for quite some time, so when it finally died I didn’t feel guilty about rushing to my computer to purchase a new one.  When it arrived, I plugged it in and promptly sharpened at least 300 pencils.  No joke.  Ah!!! I love a traditional, freshly sharpened pencil.
  • I’m loving teaching my piano students.  They bring me so much joy.  I feel so energized after getting to teach.
  • Our family room floor lamp has been disintegrating for many months.  We thought long and hard about what to do to improve the lighting in that room, which often feels super gloomy and not at all cozy in the evening and at night.  We considered a light fixture wired into the ceiling, or a light fixture wired into the wall to avoid the problem of people bumping into the floor lamp.  We dismissed those ideas and decided a new floor lamp was the way to go, and then for months searched for a floor lamp that wouldn’t continue to topple and gauge the wall.  Eventually we found one that we liked and thought would work nicely.  It arrived last week, and when we assembled it, I fell in love with the cozy direct lighting it provides for one of my favorite reading spots.  Also, I think the lamp is cute as a button.
  • I’m loving our humidifiers.  For some reason, our house, which always gets very dry in the winter, got extra, super duper dry earlier than usual this fall.  My nose hurt.  Various family members had throats that were scratchy from dry air.  After we had to repair a musical instrument that was not happy about the lack of humidity, we pulled down our humidifiers, and even though they are sometimes a pain to refill, running them full blast all the time has made life indoors so much more comfortable. Plus, Mr. TOF loves it when the vapor condenses in the cool air overnight and causes it to “rain” on his lego display that is right next to the humidifier in the family room.  It was a great science lesson on clouds and fog.
  • About a year ago my dentist made an orthodontic splint for my jaw, which has issues probably related to the braces that corrected an overbite when I was a kid.  The splint looks like a retainer, and time and time again, I’ve been amazed at how it has helped my jaw relax when it gets sore and locked up, gotten rid of many of my tension headaches, especially on long car drives, and changes the way I breathe when I sleep. When I snap that thing over my teeth good things happen.
  • I treated myself to a package of TUL gel pens, and I’m absolutely loving them.
  • One of my students brought me a bouquet of pepperberry for my birthday from a neighborhood flower shop.  The berries smell amazing.  Every time I walk past them I stick my nose right in and inhale.
