Hyacinth

A student gifted me with a hyacinth bulb at Christmas, and in the cold, dark days of January, we started the bulb.  I love watching the transformation of the bare bulb to the growth of roots, a little green sprout peeking up out of the top of the bulb, and then all that wonderful growth that leads into a blooming flower.  It’s so nice to have something fresh actively growing in the dead of winter, amidst snowstorms and ice and bitter cold.  This year I kept the growing bulb in my office, and it cheers me up whenever I walk in.

And of course, I love that hyacinths bloom purple!
