Some Things I’ve Been Loving

  • This summer I’ve been loving the shimmery silky look of water on the shores of Lake Superior.  I love how it moves, heaves, and sways.  I love how it blends together and looks like bumpy, muted glass.
  • I’ve been loving fresh herbs straight from my deck.
  • I bought this fancy salad spinner to wash herbs, lettuce, and other produce.  It’s fantastic.
  • While the kidlets in this house seem to NEVER GO TO BED AT NIGHT, I have been enjoying slow peaceful mornings with few people up.  If someone is up, they seem to be headed out the door in the morning.  I love getting to sleep in until 8 o’clock in the summer (some of these kidlets are sleeping until 11:00 a.m. or later) and I’m going to enjoy every last morning of sleeping in before the grind of the school year bears down and forces me out of bed well before sunrise.
  • The Banana is learning parts of the Bach’s Double Violin Concerto.  What a genius piece of music!  I’ve been enjoying listening to a recording her violin teacher recommended this summer, but even more of a treat was getting to go to a Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra concert a few weeks ago where the concertmaster of the DSSO and the concertmaster of a symphony orchestra in Phoenix (who grew up here) played together.  It was sublime.
  • YaYa is working at an ice cream shop this summer, which means I’ve had a lot of access to really amazing ice cream.  She’s been creating all sorts of new combinations for me to try (I’m notorious for ALWAYS ordering the EXACT same thing . . . once I find something I like I stick with it!).  I’ve been loving my fancy ice cream all summer. Even better, my ice cream often comes in a waffle cone!  I love waffle cones.
  • I’ve stayed away from cast iron pans for most of my adult life, because it just seemed too overwhelming, but lately I’ve been cooking more and more with cast iron.  I love how it can go in the oven and on the stove, and it turns out that some things really do taste better cooked on cast iron!
  • The combination of fresh mozzarella, homemade rosemary bread, and fresh basil has been something I’ve really been enjoying this summer.
