Learned in December

  • I learned the meaning of the word “Ersatz.” (An inferior, not genuine substitute)
  • I learned that just walking into a university library inspires me so much to WANT to learn. I do love learning, and all those bookshelves are filled with so many delicious books. Plus, university libraries are so quiet and peaceful, and they have such comfortable chairs. I didn’t have time to sit down and use one of those comfy chairs because I had kidlets with me, but I really wanted to sit and just start reading.
  • I was terribly sad to learn that my go-to list app, Wunderlist is going goodbye in a few weeks. It was bought by Microsoft, and they are incorporating it into their own list app, which I’m having trouble with (they keep kicking me out of my account). While the new app looks nice, I’m just frustrated about having so much trouble accessing it, so I retyped almost all of my 46 lists (I have lists for everything) into the Apple Reminders App. I’m getting used to it, but I think it will work just fine.
  • It turns out that family members stealing my long ice scraper, which is NEVER supposed to leave my van, even in the middle of July is a big temper tantrum trigger for me. Let’s just say that it was the perfect storm: an ice storm the day before a choir rehearsal, followed by subzero weather. My ice scraper ended up in my husband’s car (he swears it wasn’t him) and it took 50 minutes to defrost my windshield without any kind of ice scraper. I may have stomped my feet and shouted a little, and I definitely arrived at my rehearsal late even though I allowed an extra half hour to drive there because of bad roads.
  • If I make cookies to gift neighbors at Christmas, I need to IMMEDIATELY deliver them to the neighbors. The container that I couldn’t instantly send over to a neighbor ended up getting stolen and eaten by anonymous children.
  • I’m learning a bit about deaf culture and the history of sign language, which is the topic of The Banana’s History Day project, and the reason why we were perusing the university library. I couldn’t help but skim through some of the books she brought home.
