Kitchen Sunlight

Right around the time change, which also happens to be right around the spring equinox, the setting sun starts peeking through the dining room window in a way that illuminates the side of the kitchen where the sink and dishwasher sit. Our kitchen sits in the exact middle of our house, with only a singular north facing window to let in natural light that doesn’t come in from the dining room or family room, where there are more windows. The kitchen, even though it is white, is often a little gloomy, especially on a cloudy day. It is particularly dark in the winter months, so when the golden light appears this time of year, it is loveliness. The sunlight glitters off the dishes in the dishwasher. The kitchen sink gleams a little bit. The cupboards glow with rosy happiness. It almost makes me want to cook something. It definitely motivates me to sweep the floor and load the dishwasher. (I’m telling you, these kidlets can make a mess of my kitchen in no time flat. It never ceases to amaze me.)

I’m actually a big fan of the time change, especially in the spring, even though everyone is always complaining about it. The switch never really bothers me, and I’m always so very happy to get those extra hours of daylight in the evening. I love being able to go for an evening walk while there is still light after I’m finished teaching for the day. Everything about my day is easier when the darkness of the midwinter is disappearing.
