Kilt Day

A few months ago, shortly after The Banana arrived for summer break, Dr. Peds asked her about what dates she would be moving back to college so that he could arrange things in his schedule. There were a few dates that students could move back in to college, but only one date that worked for Dr. Peds to drive, August 30. Dr. Peds immediately declared August 30 to be “Kilt Day”
Dr. Peds does, in fact, have a large collection of kilts that he enjoys wearing randomly. He particularly enjoys wearing a kilt at an occasion where his teenagers will be present. For example, he has worn a kilt to Christmas Eve services at church (not really a big deal because there are a few people who actually wear kilts every now and then). Or he might wear a kilt to a concert now and then. or show up in a kilt when picking up or dropping off a teenager from an activity. Dr. Peds actually wore a kilt last May when he picked up The Banana from college, but it perhaps did not have the desired effect because everyone else had pretty much left the college before he managed to get there, and The Banana quickly threw everything in the car and they departed.
The Banana kept hoping that Dr. Peds would perhaps forget about Kilt Day as the summer wore on. While her roommate has met our family already, there were multiple other pseudo roommates who share a communal living area who have not really even met The Banana before. A dad in a kilt can be a lot to digest if you are not used to that sort of thing.
Dr. Peds did not forget about Kilt Day, not for a second. The Banana is not a minimalist when it comes to packing, so she definitely could not fit everything into one vehicle and most definitely needed his help. On August 30, Dr. Peds came into her room dressed for the day in a sweatshirt celebrating her college and a lovely green and blue plaid kilt, ready to go.
It soon became apparent that it would be a few hours before the cars were actually loaded and they would be able to leave, so Dr. Peds decided to come to church with the rest of us while The Banana finished up last minute things that needed to be taken care of.
When he realized what was happening, Mr. TOF was hoping that he could sit with friends at church and pretend not to know us, but his friends did not happen to be attending the first service that morning. Therefore, he ended up sitting next to a kilt wearing parent with a sigh.
Dr. Peds drove in a different vehicle to church because Peanut Maximus and I were staying to help at the second service. When Peanut Maximus saw Dr. Peds climbing into his truck wearing the same sweatshirt and kilt, he excitedly exclaimed, “A QUILT!!!!! A QUILT! Daddy is wearing a quilt to church!”
Having just said goodbye to The Banana, since the plan was that she would probably be gone by the time I got back from church, I was feeling a little teary, but that just cracked me up so much that I ended up laughing and crying at the same time while driving. I could barely see where I was going. Luckily everyone got there safely!
