The Kindergartener Speaks About Sticky Shirts

This morning I woke up at the regular time and groaned.  I just didn’t want to have to get up and do the get-the-kids-to-the-bus-stop battle.  My husband woke up too, and instead of falling right back to sleep like usual, he decided to give me a special treat and get up with YaYa and Mr. SP.  He brought me a bottle so I could feed Squirmy in bed, and he made breakfast for the others, sent YaYa to school with lunch money, and got everyone to the bus on time.  It was WONDERFUL.

Obviously, I didn’t see my school kids this morning.  I didn’t know what they were wearing.  It’s not like my children ever match, they never look put together, and I don’t need them to.  They are sloppy kids who look sloppy most of the time.  However, I do try to make sure they look relatively clean before I send them to school in the morning.  Imagine my raised eyebrows when I picked Mr. SP up at kindergarten today outside his classroom.

Me:  Honey, watch out with your backpack.  Stop flinging that around!  You are going to bonk into somebody.  Be careful.  We need to pay attention to where we are in relation to other people so we don’t have a crash.  Look where you are going.  HEY!  Didn’t you wear that shirt yesterday?  And I think you wore it last night for pajamas too!

Mr. SP:  Well, maybe.

Me:  Honey, don’t you see all that raspberry jam you spilled on this shirt yesterday?  It’s all over the front.  And here’s some chocolate.  Is this mayonnaise that dried up?  Honey, this shirt is filthy!

Mr. SP:  Oh, I didn’t notice.

Me:  SWEETIE!  You need to put dirty laundry in the laundry shoot!  You just can’t wear dirty clothes to school.  You HAVE TO WEAR CLEAN CLOTHES TO SCHOOl!

Mr. SP:  Well, I just don’t see why.

Me:  Well, honey, people think you don’t take care of yourself when you wear dirty clothes.  It’s like brushing your teeth and combing your hair.  You need clean clothes every morning.

Mr. SP:  Mom, the rest of the kindergarteners don’t notice those things AT ALL.
