Revisiting First Grade Fads: My Sticker Book

A couple of weeks ago I was searching for something in the corner of my attic, and I came upon a box that I'd brought here from North Dakota and stuck way in the back behind a bunch of other stuff.  I opened it up, and inside was my collection of high school newspapers (they were terrible!) all the book reports I wrote in seventh grade (there were a lot of them) and several other miscellaneous items.  At the bottom of the box was my sticker book from first grade!  Sticker books were ALL the rage in first grade.  Many kids had very, very fancy sticker books where they kept coveted collections of stickers.  Some of the books were so fancy that the stickers could be peeled off and restuck in new places, and traded with friends.

My sticker book was not nearly that fancy, but I remember very distinctly going to Jamestown with my family and getting my sticker book.  I was so very excited to take it to first grade the next day.  I'm very impressed that it has survived my many moves and made it to the corner of my attic.

Stopsign

As soon as I opened the book up, I remembered that this was my favorite page of stickers.  I put my very special stickers on THIS page. I can't exactly remember why.  On the top right hand side you will see three stickers of girls.  I thought these were magnificent because the background was transparent. There are several Christmas stickers because at the time I loved Christmas, and on the left hand side, you will find my very favorite stickers from Thanksgiving and St. Patrick's Day.  Several of the stickers on these pages had a fuzzy texture to them, which I found very impressive.  I also enjoyed the neat facial expressions on the stickers from a visit to my doctor.  I traded a few of them, though, for better stickers from my friends.

Take note of the stop sign sticker.  This was my most prized sticker of all.  A very special second grader who was an amazing, fluent reader gave it to me.  We had combined classrooms of first and second graders, and I would sit at my desk and listen to that particular second grader read and covet the day when I could read that well.  The stop sign is kind of puffy, and has a silken texture that is nearly worn away.
Scratchandsniff

This was another of my favorite pages, where I stored all of my stratch and sniff stickers, along with the calico girl stickers.  I know thatcCalico girl had a special name, but I can't remember what it was.  I also had a cookbook that went with them, but I never made anything in the cookbook.  I never really did like cooking.  There are several Buddy Bear stickers on these pages.  He was the character in our Weekly Reader stories.  My husband loved Buddy Bear too, and he has some of the same Buddy Bear books from book orders that I used to have.  Buddy Bear had a pet mouse/friend whose name was Nibble.

I hadn't even thought of sticker books in ages, so it was really fun to discover that mine was tucked up in my attic.

I think I have some of those very same stickers! 🙂 I remember thinking the transparent ones were super cool too. I even had that flowerpot hat girl… was that the calico girl? She’s cute. What a find. I need to blog more of my stickers on my wayback blog.
