Sledding on Christmas Day

The weather has been ridiculously warm, and every little bit of snow we seem to get melts away.  However, the day before Christmas Eve, we received a light dusting of snow, just enough to make things look white and Christmas-like.  This was a huge blessing, because we actually thought we were not going to be able to go sledding, and we’ve gone sledding on Christmas Day for ten years straight.  So, when the snow arrived we were bound and determined to do a bit of sledding.  We bundled everyone up (it took more than 45 minutes).  We headed for one of our favorite big hills to check and see about the snow levels, although we were pretty sure that there wouldn’t be enough snow.  There wasn’t. So we turned around to go to the next choice of hill, but we ended up waiting at a stop sign on a side street for a really, really long time, because the Russell car was not anywhere to be seen.  Finally we turned the car around and discovered that they had a faulty gas gauge and had run out of gas.

While the gas situation was getting fixed, some of us went on a beautiful, crazy hike through the woods that involved a lot of sliding down steep trails and quite a lot of snowball fights, and a bit of grumping, of course.  But by the time we arrived back at the cars, they were both up and running.

So we drove to our third choice of hill, which was a winner!  It was a smaller hill, but still lots of fun.  We sent Dot, Alex and Katherine back for a nap and the rest of us slid and tumbled and bumbled all around in the snow.  The hill slopes down to a pond, and on the pond were some people playing broom ball.  Mr. Trouble on Two Feet liked watching their ball and he even got in a little sledding himself.  He wasn’t quite sure what to make of downhill sledding.  We would have stayed longer, but it was time to come home and finish cooking our Christmas meal, plus Mr. TOTF was getting pretty tired and cranky.
