Brief Scenes from our Hike at Tettagouche State Park

TettagoucheI won't lie to you and tell you that our hike at Tettagouche State Park was uneventful, last Saturday.  In fact, it was fraught with minor catastrophes in addition to the shoe episode below.  About half way through the hike, at the point where we were farthest from our diaper bag and car, Mr. Sneaky Pants had a very smelly accident in his pants because he was scared of the outhouses (I can't blame him . . . I remember being his age and being absolutely terrified of falling down the hole in outhouses).  He smelled very strongly of sewage treatment plant for the remainder of our nature experience.  Near the end of the hike, The Banana had diarrhea on my back in the backpack, which led both of us to be rather stinky also.  There were a lot of steps and steep inclines on the hike, so by the time we got back to the car, I was having to nearly pick up my legs and move them up steps (a 34 pound Banana on your back allows you to experience hiking in a whole new way).

BUT, we did have a good time.  The scenery was beautiful.  The waterfalls were wonderful.  It was a hot and sticky day, so we had a wonderful time relaxing on the rocks along the river and wading in the gurgling water.  There were itty bitty curious fish to watch, and frogs and tadpoles to observe, as well as water spiders.  Mr. Sneaky Pants found a great log in the middle of a shallow part of the river, and had a fantastic time pretending he was the captain of a pirate ship.  And the peanut butter balls I brought along in our cooler tasted so good on our trip home.

Peanut Butter Allergy Bars
Dr. Peds calls these allergy bars because they include all the major things kids are allergic to!  So, if you survive eating one, you're probably good to go.

1 cup of peanut butter
1 cup of honey
1 cup of whole wheat flour (or half white, half whole wheat)
1 cup of oatmeal

Mix.  Roll into balls and then roll in wheat germ to coat.

You can also substitute powdered milk for the flour . . . that's what the original recipe called for, but we didn't like the aftertaste with powdered milk.

ShoereassemblyHere's Dr. Peds reassembling The Banana's hiking shoes.  She's always happy to put on a pair of shoes, and she has been really taken with these little tennis shoes lately.  She was a great hiker, and managed almost a half mile all by herself. That was quite a feat considering she had a much shorter than usual nap in the car on the way to the state park.
