The New-to-Us Vintage Bike

Because we have rough and tumble bike riders around here, some of our ultra-cheap-acquired-at-garage-sale bikes have deteriorated to the point of not being able to be fixed up.  Specifically, Mr. SP’s bike is in pretty bad shape, according to Dr. Peds, so he has been on the lookout for reasonably priced used bicycles, scouring the garage sale ads and Craigslist.  Last Saturday he came across an add for a vintage girls bike, with curvy handlebars and a comfy banana seat.  He bounded into the room where I was reading, and asked me what I thought.  The bike reminded me of my own childhood bike, which made me smile.  After calling the owner and finding out the bike was still available., he and The Banana were off to close the deal.

The Banana is IN LOVE with her new wheels.  Technically YaYa’s old bike is still hers too, but she completely adores this “new” special bike.  It’s such a piece of metal, let me tell you!  It’s heavy.  It’s sturdy.  It feels like it came from a different era, which of course it did, since I’m pretty sure it’s probably older than me.  She loves the handle bars.  She loves the super comfy banana seat.  She has been riding it up and down the street nonstop since Saturday.  For a girl who always seems to end up with someone else’s leftovers (not that they were new in the first place, mind you) having a bike that she went with her dad to get special has turned out into a VERY big deal.

We love that she loves it so much.  I also love that something old could make her so very happy. Seeing her zip around on it  kind of makes me want to hop on board myself. The Banana has some terrific plans for decorating her bike for the Independence Day kid parade tomorrow.  She even wrangled Dr. Peds to go with her to pick up some extra special decorations, and they came home with some great supplies.
