A Summer Filled with Reading

In nearly every moment of his free time this summer, Mr. Sneaky Pants has either been holed up in my room where his siblings won’t bother him while he builds things with LEGOs, or he has been curled up in a corner somewhere by himself with a book.  Being by himself with a book is what makes him happiest, and there is a part of me that completely understands that need for relaxation and escape, and another part of me that wholeheartedly loves that he enjoys getting wrapped up in stories so much.  Unless there is something else that I need help with or some place we need to go or do, I pretty much just let him read.  Everyone stays happier that way.

Recently I’ve actually questioned whether I have allowed him to spend too much time alone with books this summer.

He climbed in the van on the way to the beach the other day and asked, “Is my life jacket among these?”

I’m not sure that word choice is typical for an eight year old.

The other day I was teaching him how to bookmark things on the computer.  During his precious computer time he enjoys going to some specific websites, and while I was fixing another computer issue I showed him how to bookmark them into his folder on the computer.  He was so excited about the bookmarks, and thanked me  many times over for showing him.  Hours later at supper, he thanked me again and said, “I just don’t fancy having to google the same things over and over.”

Dr. Peds looked at me and raised his eyebrows.

Then we both felt old, because I didn’t really imagine a day when my child would complain that googling something would take too much time.  Mr. SP was actually surprised when Dr. Peds mentioned that once upon a time if you wanted to know more about something you had to go to the library, find a book and look it up.

Regardless, Mr. SP’s use of the word “fancy” still makes me smile days later.
