What I Learned in September

  • There is a huge, old castle-like building not far out of Duluth on ;the shore of Lake Superior, and I’ve always wondered exactly what it was built for.  When I was researching some local history this month I learned all about how a typhoid outbreak long ago spurred action in creating safe water for the city, and the result was a clean water source outside the city, that could be pumped in to avoid drinking water mixing with sewage.  The result was the enormous castle shaped building, which housed the equipment to pump clean, uncontaminated water out of Lake Superior for drinking water.
  •  I learned how slurring works on the violin.  I don’t actually slur  on the violin— The Banana does.  Now I know how it’s done and the coordination of slurring for a beginning violinist seems to be VERY challenging.  Oh my goodness.  Talk about coordination skills.  I’m sure it will be easier soon, but right now it is not!
  • Encountering snakes in the wild still makes me scream.  Loudly.  I can’t help it even when I know better.  I can’t stop even when my screaming is needlessly scaring a preschooler next to me.  Man, do I hate snakes.
