Conversations: Spending Habits
We were seated at the supper table. YaYa noticed that Mr. SP was wearing a wristwatch that belonged to The Banana. It was obviously The Banana’s watch because it was white with a large swath of pink.
YaYa: Why are you wearing your little sister’s watch?
Mr. SP: I need it.
The Banana: Give back my watch.
Mr. SP: You said I could use it.
The Banana: I said you could use it for a few hours. It’s been a whole day and a half. Give my watch back.
Mr. SP: But I need this watch to time how much I read.
Me: Where’s your watch?
Mr. SP: I can’t find it.
YaYa: Why don’t you get a new watch, then?
Mr. SP: I don’t have enough money.
The Banana: How much is a watch, anyway?
YaYa: About twenty dollars.
Mr. SP: Well, I guess I do have enough money for a watch. I have birthday money. But I’m saving it to by a computer version of Minecraft.
YaYa: What? You already have Minecraft on the iPad.
Mr. SP: Yeah, but the computer version does more things.
YaYa; That is a complete waste of money. You should get the watch. You need the watch. You would use the watch.
Mr. SP: But the watch is not as much fun. And I can borrow a watch.
YaYa: That is completely ridiculous! It’s wasteful! Why would you spend money on a VIDEO game when you could buy something that you need and that you’d use. Plus, The Banana’s watch is PINK.
Mr. SP: Well, you are a girl. I am a boy. Boys spend money on ridiculous and wasteful things. That’s what we do.
