This Summer: Noah

This summer Mr. Sneak Pants acquired his very own public  library card.  It is a very big deal, and he was super excited about it.  The rule in our family is that you are able to obtain your own library card when you are able to transport yourself to the branch library (about a mile away).  Those in possession of a library card have full responsibility for the items checked out on that card, including overdue fines, replacement costs for lost materials, and are in charge of keeping their library card in a safe and accessible place.

At the beginning of the summer Dr. Peds showed Mr. SP a good route to use to bike or walk to the library, and whenever he has been home this summer, he has been a frequent library visitor.  He loves having the freedom to go to the library by himself and stay for a couple of hours.  He’s been super reliable about getting back home at the right time, and he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to check out books more frequently than the once a week library visit on Wednesdays that is my standard routine.

Along the way, he’s learned a few lessons, like the importance of keeping track of materials that are checked out so that they don’t have to be replaced.  He’s worked with the librarians to pay a few small fines all on his own, and he’s become even more responsible with his books.  (Sometimes lessons are more effectively learned the hard way.) He’s talked to librarians on his own when he’s had questions.  He’s learned to look up things on the library website.

I love that he’s such a fan of the library.  I love that he loves to loose himself in books there.
