The Banana Celebrates 9 Years

The Banana celebrated a birthday last Tuesday.  I began the day hours before sunrise because I had a few preparations to take care of, like cooking special food that was requested to go into the birthday girl’s lunch box, baking a birthday cake, wrapping some presents, and getting the table ready.  The grocery store didn’t open until 6:00 a.m., and I was two hours into preparations by that point.  The Banana actually woke up right as I was leaving to pick up the donuts for breakfast.  She asked if she could come along to pick out the donuts for everyone.  Sure!  I grabbed some last minute items needed for the birthday festivities, and she picked out the donuts.  The sunrise was beautiful.  It was fun to spend a few special minutes with my girl.

We were back home in time to crawl into the bathtub for breakfast and open presents in the dining room.  The bathtub faucet currently suffers from excessive dripping.  The last person into the tub had to sit next to the faucet.  This made the sleepy teenager even more reluctant to participate, but at least the donuts were yummy!

The Banana was off to school, birthday treats in hand, along with her lunch box filled with pasta vegetable salad and a homemade chocolate chip cookie.

When she came home from school Dr. Peds took The Banana and our neighbor halfway down the street to Adventure Zone for some rock climbing and other crazy, overstimulating activities while I was teaching.  They had a great time and may have consumed ice cream in the process.  They were home for supper with macaroni pizza in hand.  We were joined by a few more neighbors for cake.

So, the cake may have been a catastrophe.  I used a different pan for one of the layers, which caused some layers to crack and break, and then my frosting got too runny again, and didn’t cover up the mistakes very well, (although runny frosting always tastes more delicious on cake, I think).  It was a bit lopsided and pretty ugly.  Sprinkles helped.  The kidlets still had a great time laughing at my efforts, though.  Oh well.  At least I tried.  It was such a busy teaching day for me that I didn’t have time and resources to fix the catastrophe.  The appearance did not really affect the taste, so the sugary bliss was still all good in the end.

Taste test:

The mayhem that always ensues after cake was in full swing, but because it was a school night, we headed into evening chores (The birthday girl was gleefully exempt) and bedtime preparations.  I think she had a good day.
