What I Learned in May
- I learned about Alfred Schnittke, a brief summary of his life how it influenced the music he composed.
- I’m in the process of learning thumb position on the cello, and how to connect motion between my shoulder blades (it’s still pretty abstract for me, though).
- I’m fascinated with following the twitter feed of Jeff Williams, an astronaut currently orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station, and native to a small town nearby in Wisconsin. He posts amazing photographs from space.
- In just a couple of days, I’ve gotten really good at sealing The Banana’s plaster cast in a garbage bag with duct tape so she can shower.
- I learned Rachmaninoff Vespers (and rejoiced while singing it in two separate performances).
- I’m using Rosetta Stone to learn Russian, and although I’m not nearly as fast as my kids, I’m amazed at what I’m able to understand with just a little work each day. Listening and reading and repeating is definitely going better for me than speaking and writing at this point, but progress is definitely being made.
