A New Violin

The Banana has grown leaps and bounds since she started the violin, and without her teacher and I realizing that she needed a larger instrument until one afternoon a couple of weeks ago, when I mentioned something to her teacher.  After measuring her, it was determined that she needed to jump up from a half size violin to a full size instrument, skipping 3/4 size all together.  Yikes!

We took a trip to the violin store downtown and traded her old violin for a “new” old violin.  We tried four violins at the store, and knew right away that we didn’t want 2 of them, which left us with 2 violins (ironically, the two in the middle of the price range) to choose from.  It was a hard decision, but we came away with a lovely old French violin, and I think it was just the choice.  It sounds so much more amazing than the half size violin.

It took a few days to adjust to the new size, but we are loving the new instrument.  The Banana loves her violin so much even though its hard work and frustrating sometimes.  She loves playing in the Sinfonia each week.  I’m so glad she has the opportunity to do that.  Each week she comes bouncing back to the car and says, “I just love playing together with other people!”

She’s right.  There is something so special about getting to work together with others in an ensemble to create something amazing that you simply can’t make on your own.  It’s one of my favorite things about music too.
