What I Learned in March

  • I’m continuing to learn to read tenor clef.  I even play little games on the iPad to get better, but really in the end it comes down to knowing a few guide notes and then employing some reading skills.  It’s HARD.  For me,  But I’m learning how to better teach my little students how to read treble and bass clef by tackling this clef that is so very foreign to me.
  • The Arrowhead Chorale is singing the Bach B minor Mass, so I’m learning that.  It’s also hard.  But every single day I’m more enamored of the genius that is J.S. Bach.  I’ve been researching the music symbolism in the mass, and it’s absolutely fascinating.  I was also interested to know why Bach wrote this one mass, when most of what he wrote fits very closely into the context of his life as a composer working for the Lutheran churches in Leipzig, so I’ve been learning about this particular time in Bach’s life as well.
  • I learned that even though I lived in Wisconsin for three years and I’ve lived in Minnesota for ten years, when someone asks me for the area code of my phone number, at LEAST half the time I start answering “701” before I stop myself and remember that’s not my area code anymore.  I’m just a North Dakota girl at heart, I guess.  Maybe someday I’ll fully learn my own area code.
