What I Learned in November and December

  • I learned  my kids have figured out that my expressive vocabulary increases exponentially when I am agitated.  The more irritated I get the more I start to use big words, and as I get more worked up the words get bigger.  It unfortunately cracks them up and they end up in a laughing heap on the floor.
  • At the piano I worked through relearning some of my favorite Spanish walzes by Enrique Granados.
  • On my cello I learned several new pieces, and I’m excited to report that I am finally able to use a little bit of vibrato.  This is a big deal because I’ve been struggling with it for months and months.  It’s still a struggle, but great progress was made these past few weeks.  I’m also working on sixth and seventh positions.
  • I was SO excited to learn that Queen Elizabeth does not allow dishes with garlic in Buckingham Palace!  She also only allows a minimal amount of onions in the food prepared for her.  I always did admire her brilliance and fortitude.  I think I’d make a great guest at Buckingham Palace.
  • There is actually a name for the pomegranate seeds:  arils
  • I learned that it would be wise in the future to call and confirm piano recital sharing dates and locations the week of the scheduled recital.  Each Christmas my students share music at assisted living centers, and this year somehow I managed to get all the dates mixed up!  We arrived at one place a day before they were expecting us, and when I wisely called the other place, they had been expecting us two days previous!  Gracious!  Luckily the first place was very happy to bring down some residents even though it was a different day.  The other place had scheduled something for the day I thought we were supposed to go, so we moved music sharing to my house.  It all turned out well in the end, but I have definitely learned my lesson!
  • I learned (by myself)  how to navigate all the terminals in the Chicago O’Hare Airport.  I’m awesome!
