Recent Reads: Six Terrific Picture Books
- Wolf in the Snow by Matthew Cordell. It just won the Calcedott, but can I just say that we loved it first?
- Little i by Michael Hall. It’s adorable. The letter “I” is Mr. TOF’s favorite letter in the alphabet, so of course he loved it.
- Priscilla Gorilla by Barbara Bottner This is a terrific story about a believable little girl who is obsessed with gorillas and has to make choices about her behavior and how to share her wealth of knowledge with her classmates.
- Pictures at an Exhibition by Anna Harrell Celenza. This is a great introduction to one of my favorite classical masterworks. Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussogorsky has so much protection for interdisciplinary learning in the classroom, but this picture book is just a great picture book to read to your kids at home before you listen to the music.
- Rhoda’s Rock Hunt by Molly Berth Griffin. Oh my goodness! This picture book is fantastic. I love everything about it. I love the illustrations. I love that the little girl loves collecting rocks and has to make hard choices about which ones to keep and how to keep them. I love that she’s on a hike with her aunt and uncle. I love that this book is clearly about Northern Minnesota and Lake Superior, but they are craftily never mentioned by name.
- Olivia the Spy by Ian Falconer. Who doesn’t love Oliva the pig? In this riveting tale she eavesdrops and misunderstands her mother’s intentions. We loved it.
