Purchasing Fruit

I live in a house of fruit monsters.  Every week I purchase at least 5 bags of apples, and they are gone.  Yesterday they ate 3 tote bags of bananas in a matter of five hours, the kind the store sells for people to bake banana bread.

When I walk up to the checkout counter at the grocery store with FIVE tote bags of bananas, in fact, ALL the tote bags of bananas available for purchase at the store, they look at me skeptically.  “Are you doing a great deal of baking this week?”  They say.

“Why, no!  My children will have eaten all these in 36 hours or less,” is how I reply inside my head.  Outwardly I just smile.  I haven’t baked anything with a banana for many, many months, because there are never any truly ripe bananas around here.  Even those “bakers” bananas at the store, which are perfectly ripe on purchase, never get overripe because they are immediately consumed.
