I learned that taking my two middle kidlets to the grocery store late at night can easily turn into a wild, hilarious affair! It seems almost a little weird that taking my kids to the grocery store is not a taxing ordeal like it used to be. It’s actually pretty efficient because they run around the store really fast and bring me things that I send them off to get. But even better than that, late night grocery store trips can actually leave me laughing because of their hilarious antics and persuasive tactics. We may have come back with a few extra items not on the original shopping list.
The technology of motel keys seems to have evolved while I wasn’t looking. I stayed at a hotel with Mr. SP on the way to drop him off at music camp. When I reached the door to our room, there was no slot to slide the credit card shaped key. I stood there staring, trying to figure out what in the world was happening. Mr. SP shook his head, marveled at my middle aged lack of technological knowledge, grabbed the key, and waved it in front of a sensor on the door. Swish! We were in.
This month I slept overnight in an airport for the first time when my flight got cancelled and I couldn’t get on a standby flight. Although it’s not an experience I would choose, it was definitely interesting. It was nice to have a blanket distributed by the airline even though the airport was not cold. The blanket helped me snuggle in on my tiny little bench I was trying to sleep on. (I gave my pillow to my young traveling companion). My big takeaway for airport rest: find the quietest corner of the airport you can seek out, and avoid television sets that blare news channels all night long.
Even though I have a lot of public speaking experience, and I’m pretty comfortable talking and sharing music in front of a group of people, I apparently get nervous behind a video camera. I was asked to make a short little simple video clip about my experiences with hosting orphans from an Eastern European country that would be shown along with a lot of other material to some government officials from that country. I literally had a stomach ache thinking about it and procrastinated until the last hour to get it done. I had to film it 8 times in my office and in the end my attempt was surely not eloquent, but thankfully I think it mostly made sense. I was so relieved to be finished.
I saw a chinchilla for the first time! Who knew that my neighbors had two chinchillas? They showed them to my host child, and she is completely fascinated with their dextrous paws, extremely soft fur, and their personality.
At the train museum I had the opportunity to learn about Lincoln’s funeral car, and found it, and its history fascinating.
