Last Weekend: At Adventurous Christians

Last weekend a group of women from our church drove up to Adventurous Christians, a small camp close to Canada. We were joined by a group of women from another church in town, (and there was also a group of dads and their kids staying for the weekend as well). I was invited to go, and I was really excited when the dates worked out with the family schedule (Dr. Peds was home for the weekend and could drive the Mama Bus to haul kids around to all the places they need to go . . . maybe it’s not the Mama Bus if I’m not driving?)

I had the best time! There was both a bone chilling cold night, colder than 20 below zero, (cold that even made your teeth hurt) and a perfect, twenty degree Saturday with no wind at all! There were cold outhouses to be braved, the food was delicious, and the chairs in the lounge were so comfy. The lodge was cool in the corners and warm by the enormously tall fireplace. The people on staff at AC were so interesting, and it was just a beautiful, relaxing weekend to spend having great conversations with people I don’t ordinarily get to have longer conversations with.

We arrived just after a fresh few inches of snow, which made everything pristine! The snow covered the trees in the forest, and everything was crisp and fresh. The snow on the ground was so deep! A few times I ended up stepping off the packed trails (one time I had to take off snowshoes in the middle of the forest) and my foot went down into the snow so far that I was stuck up to my waist!

I tried cross country skiing for the first time, just on the flat, frozen lake. I liked it! 1/3 of the way around the lake, however, I ran into some slush that iced onto the skis and made the last 2/3 an interesting “walk” with giant frozen skis attached to my feet. They got heavy after awhile because they couldn’t slide anymore. Four of us went on a crazy snow shoe that was way more adventuresome than I anticipated, because it turns out those traditional, beautifully woven snowshoes are crazy slippery when ascending and descending steep hills. Our sleeping cabin smelled so great, like wonderful fresh pine. I read part of a book. Some adventurous people went on long ski excursions, and there was a polar plunge after the sauna that I elected not to add to my adventure list . . . maybe next time. Some people climbed the rock face of the fireplace.

YaYa and Mr. TOF have been there before with our church youth group, and they loved it. I can totally see why! It’s a really special place. I’m so glad I got to see what it was all about. Connecting with other people in my church community was really great.
