What I Learned in August

  • I learned to identify a cedar waxwing bird, and learned to delight in how social these little feathered friends can be!
  • The neighborhood bear likes plums! I heard a sound the other night near the garbage cans outside, and at first I thought it was just Dr. Peds taking out some garbage, but after a few minutes of rummaging sounds, I realized it was probably not Dr. Peds. Thinking a big raccoon was snacking, I peered out of my upstairs office window to discover a large, lumbersome bear digging in the garbage. After the Devious Snail flickered the lights on and off, the bear eventually meandered off down the driveway, but the next morning we woke up to see a large branch of our baby plum tree (which wasn’t supposed to have fruit, but much to Dr. Peds chagrin and my delight did indeed produce several gallons of tart plums this year!) broken down, laid waste on the ground. There were a few smaller branches that bit the dust as well. I picked the rest of the plums right away and made jam.
  • Wild plum jam is tart and tasty.
  • I learned a little bit about the art of Paul Klee.
  • I’m working on learning how to tie the kayak on top of the car. I’m trying to become self sufficient with my kayak.
