Amaryllis

A student gifted me with an amaryllis bulb at Christmas, and I planted it in a pot on the first of January. I always enjoy watching flowers grow in the midwinter. It is fascinating to watch the stem grow out of the bulb, and then observe how the plant develops. The amaryllis is going to bloom in just a few days now, and every day there is a new bit of progress to consider. The past couple of months my study buddy has been keeping a little plant journal to document the progression in growth of the amaryllis. Each week he draws the plant and measures how much it has grown and documents the changes observed. Some weeks the stem doubled in height in just a matter of days.

Towards fall the leaves will start to die back. The bulb is not dead! Place it in a cool dry place for at least 2 months. Bring it out to the sun and water. About when you give up hope you will see leaves sprouting. You have to do this for it to continue to bloom. I’m on year 2 of mine!
