Dip in the Lake
Today was the third day in a row of ninety degree weather, and already our second big heat wave for the summer season. Usually things are just thinking about warming up at this point. Hot weather is NOT my friend. Yesterday I sweated so much my face actually hurt! Today I was sweating just playing the piano. Good grief. Late in the day after Mr. TOF got back from an incredibly hot baseball practice, he and I headed to the beach for a swim. I don’t swim in The Lake very often, but I threw on my swimsuit today.
When we got there I wasn’t sure if I would actually be able to get in because the water was much colder than yesterday when I dipped my foot in a little bit while we were waiting to watch fireworks. (I would have gone in yesterday for sure if we hadn’t been in a crowd of people waiting for fireworks.). Today the water was skin numbing, take your breath away, make you gasp kind of cold. But I was so hot, and even though I wasn’t brave enough to just dive right in like I saw another of my size and maybe a decade older than me do, I knew the cold water would help. After a slow acclimation, I did manage to get all the way in and kick around with The Banana’s swim team kick board, which I may or may not have swiped.
OK. I swiped it. She’s in North Dakota visiting her grandmother, so I couldn’t ask.
Anyway, after about five minutes, bodies do acclimate to being submerged in super cold water, and it was lovely, as long as you were moving around to keep warm. After a bit I climbed out of the water and dried off on a warm rock, (it was still 90 degrees, after all) and I felt so great! My core body temperature was cool at last, and it was like I could actually think again! I know I am going to sleep so much better tonight, and the next few days the temperatures are supposed to be nice and cool.
Yay for secluded beaches where you can shiver in the almost icy water!
