Olde World Renaissance Faire
We'd been contemplating a visit to a Renaissance Faire this summer for several months now, knowing our young knight would be pretty fascinated. We had planned on making the trek down to The Cities in September for the gigantic Faire, but a couple of weeks ago Dr. Peds brought home a flyer for a Renaissance Faire just 15 miles away, with live jousting (which was our big criteria). Knowing how overwhelming the faire in The Cities is, we were so excited to find a smaller, kid friendly affair.
I ordered a special medieval dress from Etsy last weekend, and it arrived just in time. Dr. Peds was originally planning to be out of town, but the plans changed, so he made a trip to the thrift store last night and came up with the perfect peasant costume (he even did some sewing to make it work: removing a collar from the shirt and creating some peasant pants out of earth toned scrubs). The girls dressed as peasant princesses (of course) and Mr. SP loaded up all his knight regalia. He was one excited little guy.
We saw real knights dressed in plate armor, and learned all about the pieces of armor and how they were assembled. Mr. Sneaky Pants even got to try on a real knight helmet and gloves with armor on the top.
There was jousting and jousting and more jousting. The kidlets were riveted. Mr. SP was cheering for a red knight named William at the top of his lungs. He had such a good time.
The Banana took a liking to the maypole immediately, and she was all about participating in the maypole dance and any other kind of dancing whenever possible. She actually did some of the steps so well! She and I loved weaving the maypole ribbon. I give all the credit to these pictures to Dr. Peds, who had the foresight to grab the camera and switch it over to auto. Didn't he do well?
My crafty Sarah loved making a special little rag doll in the kids art area. While The Banana and Mr. SP tried out some really neat kids games.
We loved looking at the some of the neat costumes people dressed in, and enjoyed bagpipers, drummers, and a very silly act by some people pretending to be chickens. Everyone was so great at getting the kidlets involved.
