Golden
The Banana had been looking forward to her golden birthday for years. It ended up being a ridiculously crazy busy day, but we managed to get a little celebrating in. One of her big requests was balloons!! Since it was her golden birthday, I splurged and purchased two bunches of balloons, one that I picked up at the crack of dawn, and another giant bouquet of helium latex balloons that I picked up later in the morning for her evening arrival home. (It was too dark to take pictures of the colorful balloons on her birthday, so we snuck in a couple pictures before it started to rain the next evening).
Breakfast was an assortment of rice pudding, muffins (blueberry substituted for banana bran muffins that were the real request — I didn’t have ripe bananas) fruit, and rye bread with Nutella. The Banana requested pasta salad to take to school in her lunch box, and orzo with cream sauce and broccoli along with roasted parmesan brussel sprouts was on the menu for our very, very late dinner. It was so good that we were too stuffed to really want to eat cake! That didn’t stop us from having a little piece, though.
The Banana was at school all day and avoided dental appointments at a new dentist that occupied her siblings’ afternoons. She had swim practice after school and then was transported directly to youth group at church, so it was a LONG day, and there was homework on top of all of that, of course. She managed to squeeze in special phone calls with YaYa at college and Grandma Kathy. Even though I barely saw her on her birthday, I think it was a good day. It was definitely better than her thirteenth birthday when she broke her foot!
