Rowing Regatta
Our local rowing regatta took place last Saturday. It was a beautiful day for rowing! I drove my rowers down early in the morning and then hauled my lawn chair and bag of supplies over to the shore of the harbor next to the boathouse to be a super-spectator until the they were done with all of their races. The Devious Snail raced in a a boat of 8 (picture above — he’s the first seat next to the coxswain) and a Quad. The Banana was in a Four, a Quad, and a really fast boat of 8.
Mr. Trouble on Feet joined me after about an hour and a half. We were a chair sitting duo. Every once in awhile he’d get up to walk around and then come back for the important things. I sat in my chair except when I needed to get up to find the bathroom. I’m more of a silent rowing spectator, but most rowing spectators make a lot of noise when the boats come within sight, and there were a lot of rowing teams and fans at the regatta. So much that the cars were lined up and parked for more than 10 blocks in either direction on the road! There was lots of excitement interspersed between lots of downtime between when boats launch from the dock and then come back in the race. I got a lot of reading done by the time I left the regatta eight hours later!
I should have had The Banana take a picture of me in my role of super-spectator! Let me tell you, I was QUITE the sight, sitting in my lawn chair. I was wearing a long-sleeved brown humongous lightweight shirt, black loosely fitted walking pants, wild stripey socks in my Chaco sandals, a big bright blue floppy sunhat, purple cat eye sunglasses with rhinestones, and on my lap was an open book, a pair of binoculars and my camera with a long intimidating lens. Of course I could hardly hold all of those things in my lap because of my GIGANTIC pregnant belly! Strangely enough no one that was not related to me really paid any attention to me! In fact, maybe they didn’t see me at all (how could you miss me?!?) because as luck would have it whenever my own kidlets were coming in for a race, some other spectators managed to stand in front of me and have long conversations, blocking most of my view! Sigh. I could have moved for a better view, but I didn’t feel like moving that pregnant belly more than necessary.
