ONE.
We were up early for breakfast in the bathtub before The Banana headed out early to rowing and the Devious Snail headed to work. Mr. TOF was headed to an early morning trombone lesson. But really, for the birthday boy, breakfast was pretty much right on time, because he rises before the sun every day! On the menu for the bathtub was simply: scrambled eggs. Peanut Maximus loves scrambled eggs. Mr. TOF was convinced he needed donuts, but I said “No way” to that idea. Cake was already on the itinerary for later in the day.
Although we finished with a lot of eggs in the bathtub, it wasn’t as many eggs as I thought were going to be in the bathtub.
After we got back from the trombone lesson, Peanut Maximus and I read a lot of books and played in the family room. When The Banana came home from rowing, she baked and decorated an amazing little cake and made matching cupcakes with all sorts of sea creatures. It was way more creative and lovely than anything I would have managed!
We aimed for birthday cake at 2:00 in the afternoon, but Dr. Peds couldn’t come home when expected, so it was actually closer to 3:00, which meant things were a little bit rushed because The Banana had to leave for work and Mr. TOF had to get some things ready for baseball later in the day. It was a hot, dry day with lots of sun, but we hauled the high chair onto the deck beneath the umbrella and had a little cake smash.
He had been sitting in the high chair for a bit waiting for Dad, and he wasn’t sure quite what to think when the cake was delivered to the porch.
It did not take long for him to dive in.
He didn’t mind sharing.
When he finally finished we headed straight to the bathtub. Cake was everywhere!
YaYa was not home for the birthday because she was on a canoe trip with her internship, and unfortunately the Devious Snail wasn’t quite done with work to attend the cake smash, but he did make it home for present opening later in the afternoon after we had bathed all the cake away. There were many wonderful gifts, including some frog goggles for the “future swimmer” as declared by The Banana, and his very own box of Kleenex to dismantle, courtesy of Mr. TOF.
A late afternoon nap was in order after all that excitement, and later in the evening Peanut Maximus and I headed out for a birthday stroller ride, which he very much enjoyed.
