Mess of the Week: The Monday Morning Edition

Squirmy has been getting up a lot in the middle of the night.  Sometimes I’ll get lucky and he only gets up once.  Most of the time, though, he has been waking three or four times in the middle of the night and screaming his head off.  Unlike the rest of my children, who would just fall back asleep when this happened, Squirmy will just scream at the top of his lungs for hours on end.  Literally hours.  It’s best just to get up with him.  There is no reason for him to be waking up.  He’s not hungry.  He’s not hurting.  His diaper is usually wet, but not usually messy.  I  groggily scoop him out of his bed, change his diaper, and drop him back in, whereupon he screams for a another ten minutes or so and then manages to fall back asleep.

Last night was one of those nights.  This morning The Banana popped her head up next to my bed and informed me that she’d had an accident.  This is not out of the ordinary.  I told her I would take care of it, and that she should find some clean pajamas and she could go downstairs to use the computer.  This woke Squirmy up. Again.  Since it was the crack of dawn, I was hoping to ignore him and that he might fall back asleep.  I ignored him, but of course he didn’t go back to sleep.  Finally Dr. Peds walked over there.  He had done the last diaper change at 4:30 a.m. and since it was dark, and he was tired, he just stuck Squirmy back to bed in his cloth diaper and his pajama shirt.

It turns out that Squirmy had squirmed out of his diaper.  He had dismantled the diaper entirely.  He had thrown the poop out of the pack and play onto the carpet.  He threw all the diaper pieces out of the crib and onto the carpet.  Then he peed through the mesh sides of the pack and play onto the carpet, and smeared around all the poop that was still inside.

Dr. Peds threw Squirmy into the bathtub and I cleaned up the mess in both beds.  I am hoping the rest of the week is filled with more restful nights and easier wake-ups.
