An Afternoon at Little Sand Bay

An afternoon trip to Little Sand Bay, which is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, had been on my list of things to do this summer, so last Friday afternoon we traveled along the South Shore toward Bayfield.  The sand at this beach is so amazing:  perfect sugar crystals that feel so great to walk on and scoop up and dig through.  I loved seeing Squirmy’s baby footprints all over the sand, zig zagging their cuteness all over the place.  The first thing I did upon arriving was to plop everything down and start digging and enormous hole in the sand!  We played and played.  The water was pretty calm, so we unloaded the paddleboard and one of the kayaks and had fun playing with those too.  I paddled my kayak down the shoreline a bit to the west, and it was filled with all kinds of wonderful rock formations.  I didn’t go to the sea caves, which I will have to do some day with some people who are more experienced than I, but just along the little bit of coast that I paddled next to were all sorts of baby sea caves and hollowed out rocks and nooks and crannies for the water to splash about and make wonderful thunking sounds in.  I could have just kept going and going, but I turned around back toward my family.  We brought a picnic lunch, and enjoyed the splendid sunset.  Squirmy had a great time traipsing next to the water and carrying sticks around.  There were lots of sandcastles built, and Mr. SP brought along a water squirter and he had much fun causing mayhem.  He loved sitting on the front of the paddleboard and pretending that it was a fire boat and that his sisters were on fire.  The day was not without squabbles or issues, but even so, it was a terrific way to spend one of the last days of summer.
