Halloween Part Three: The Leaping Butterfly

Butterflyclosestamp

This is actually the costume I wore for Halloween in second grade!  My mom sewed it for me out of one of her old leotards and some material her cousin gave her.  Last year at Halloween my mom mailed this costume along with the pioneer costume Sarah wore for Halloween in kindergarten.  From the moment we opened the box, Sarah was smitten with the butterfly costume, and pledged that she would use it for her Halloween costume this year.

Although the costume has been in use for an entire year, flying like a butterfly never gets old.  There is much leaping, twisting and twirling, much racing across the grass to new destinations.  Sarah’s trick or treating experience was made even better because we traversed up and down our street with our friends from up the hill, and her friend Helen was dressed up like a fairy princess.  The two of them had a wonderful time flying. In fact, they were beside themselves with excitement.  They were squirly beyond recognition.

I have fond memories of wearing this costume myself.  On Halloween we were allowed to wear our costume to school all day (Sarah was quite disgruntled that she had to bring her costume in a bag and that they could only wear it for an hour and a half).  I remember flying around the gymnasium at recess, and thinking it was the very best outfit to play freeze tag in.  Unfortunately, on Halloween night it was frigid and snowing, which made squeezing the leotard over my winter coat tricky, and I ended up feeling less than graceful.  Sarah lucked out, however.  Halloween day was warm and windless:  60 degrees, sunny and calm.

I had a lot of fun taking pictures:

Sarah and Mr. Sneaky Pants spent all of the afternoon pretending that she was a fair maiden butterfly and he was the gallant knight protecting her from twelve headed dragons and gigantic spiders.

This is just soooo cool that your daughter can wear something that once belonged to you. And it’s perfect. What a great costume idea!
