“Scuba Diving” at the Sandy Beach

Our small scuba diver has been waiting and waiting to take his scuba gear to the sandy beach.  The weather this week was warm and a little muggy, so a late afternoon trip to the cool beach sounded like a relaxing way to have some family time.  It was.  The water was remarkably calm again.  We toted down our old patio umbrella that broke, and has now become the perfect beach umbrella.  I parked myself under it with my camera.  The Banana scooted around on the sand, crawling sneakily over to the next group to try to kidnap their royal blue frisbee without being detected.  Sarah jumped around and splashed like a maniac.

The scuba diver practiced his snorkeling skills.  He understood well that the snorkel was for breathing.  The tricky concept was the notion of pointing the snorkel up to maintain air flow.  Instead, he was convinced he was supposed to point the snorkel down into the water while his head was above it and breath water. Because his heavy duty goggles pinched off the air supply to his nose, this led to a lot of coughing for the first quarter of an hour.

Here we are running away from imaginary sharks in the surf.

Lest you think that this water looks merely cool and refreshing, let me remind you of Lake Superior’s hypothermic state, no warmer than about 41 or 42 degrees, (too cold for seaweed, really) which still feels mighty chilly on an 80 degree day. This does not phase my kidlets, though. Wheeeeee!
