A Clarification

Several family members have been railing me with emails and letters, concerned that our financial situation is in shambles and we cannot afford to heat our home, and that we are neglecting our children, depriving them of a warm environment. So I’m taking a small moment to publicly clarify that we CHOOSE to have a chilly house because

1. We LIKE to be chilly. It’s comfortable to us, unlike miserable heat and humidity that we might encounter in the middle of July. We wait all summer for winter so that we can bask in multiple layers of clothes.

2. We LIKE to use less nonrenewable energy. One hundred years ago people did not heat all interior structures to 70 degrees. They acclimated their bodies to the seasonal temperature, and heated only the places they found themselves using the most. At night they snuggled under lots of quilts. And they did JUST fine. By just turning down the thermostat a few degrees and wearing fuzzy socks and a nice comfy sweater, we can help our environment a lot.

Our children are doing great. Most of the time they choose not to even wear the fuzzy socks and sweaters provided in abundance for them because they are running and jumping around like maniacs and feel hot and sweaty even in our chilly house.

You can stop worrying. Really. We ARE fit and suitable parents.

No worries there. This past weekend my apt was heated to … get this… 87 degrees. And not by choice. I live on the 3rd floor and though my heat is pretty much turned OFF or down as low as 65 degrees my thermostat shows it’s nearly 80 in my place. I don’t pay for heat, which is good since I was forced to open windows to survive the temp. I think it must be all that heat rising from folks who live below me … that or the thermostat is broken. Yikes. I will admit I tend toward a nice 70 degrees, but I understand what you are saying. You and Marci have the chilly house thing in common!
