  • This is perhaps the coldest spring I can remember.  Ever.  While I consider myself a patient person, it is starting to get hard to watch everyone else move into spring and summer, and here we are, most of our trees without leaves or perhaps just the beginnings of leaves starting to appear.  The grass is finally green, though, so I have hope.  I am convinced that Northern Minnesota is the last place in the continental United States to warm up in the spring.  We can’t be that far ahead of Alaska, either.
  • Despite the slow spring, I am looking forward to the rest of summer, enjoying those perfect days next to Lake Superior while the rest of the country is sweltering.  I would clearly rather be cold than too warm.
  • Tonight is the student piano recital!  Mr. SP and The Banana are both playing, and I’ve just finished burning all the CDs for the student portfolios.  Throughout the year each student records several pieces that they have worked hard on and I burn the collection onto a CD to give to them each spring after the recital.  Its such a simple (albeit time consuming) idea, and yet over the years has transformed my piano studio.  Recording music is motivating for so many students, and they take extra pains to prepare that music.  It’s also practice for playing under a bit of pressure, and I love how so many of them are determined to get it right.  The littlest students love to hear themselves right away, and sometimes we work in a bit of analysis about their performance.  Last year I had a snafu with the portfolios and ended up loosing a bunch of files in a technology glitch.  It was fun to see how many students told me how they missed having ALL of their recorded files on the portfolios this year.  They made sure I was getting everything stored safely.  I’m happy it matters to so many of them.
  • This is the last week of school!  We are ready for a change in the structure of the day.  I am not so sure I’m ready for perpetual bickering for the next three months.  I’m trying to look at it positively, though.
  • I still haven’t sent my mother her Mother’s Day box.  Bad.  Bad.  Bad.  I’m working on it, Mom.  I really do love you!  At this rate it might get to you by Father’s Day. Or Maybe your birthday.
  • I am excited to grow herbs like oregano and raspberry again this summer.
  • My Amish clothes drying rack is being put to frequent use whenever the sun is shining.  I love baking a load or two of laundry in the sun and smelling the fresh air on the fabric when I bring it back inside.  I also love that I can move the drying rack around, although most of the time it stays on our warm deck.

Love has nothing to do with a box, its just there always. So don’t fret over sending something to me, pictures of the kids and of the things you are doing is the best. Makes me feel like I am there with you.
