Little Free Library

After reading on a blog the story of one family’s newly built Little Free Library, I instantly knew my neighborhood needed one, and that the corner of my yard would be a perfect location.  All sorts of people bike and walk and run past my house, it’s on a corner that lots of families drive by on their way to Montessori school, several teenagers hop on a school bus at my corner, piano students come and go, and I know for a fact that there are lots of readers in my neighborhood.  I asked Dr. Peds what he thought of the idea, and he immediately went to the store and got the lumber.

He’s a keeper of a husband, I tell you.

Dr. Peds looked at several pictures of Little Free Libraries, and then combined the ideas he liked the best to make his own design.  Building the structure seemed to go pretty smoothly for him (it’s even lined with cedar) but constructing the door proved a little tricky and there were many trips to Menards involved.  However, the finishing touches were put on last night, and we are open for business today.

It is AMAZING how many people in the neighborhood have stopped by to express their excitement.  I put the books in last night and within a half an hour five people had used it!  People I’ve never seen before have been out walking and stopped to say how thrilled they were to find the library and that they have plans to bring books soon.

Our whole family is very excited about the project.  Not only am I happy that so many people are on board, but I’m also happy for the opportunity for some book turnover in our house.  We have a LOT of children’s books around here, but my fast reading children go through chapter books like nobody’s business.  Even though we go to the library often and check out bags of books, inevitably there are many moments each week when someone comes up to me to tell me they are out of books to read.

I’ve sent in my registration for the Little Free Library, and I should be getting my charter sign very soon.
